Basic orientation
-
Tsinghua University is located in Haidian District in northwestern Beijing, which is a central municipal district with a high concentration of universities (e.g. Peking University), research institutes (e.g. Chinese Academy of Sciences, National Library of China), and technology companies.
- We are just north of the North 4th Ring Road 北四环, a major route in Beijing (the Ring-road system is a good way to get a sense of geography of Beijing).
- We are also approx. 15-min drive north of the Zhongguancun 中关村 area, which is populated with commercial developments, schools, and tech firms (See more below: Accommodation).
- Tsinghua has one large main campus rather than multiple locations scattered in the city, and campus entrance is managed through a unified electronic system, which requires a pre-registered ID (Passport or Chinese Citizen ID) to be shown/swiped at the gate for entrance. This is the same when you take a taxi/ride-hailing vehicle to enter the campus.

Conference venue
The campus is large in the sense that it often takes a 10–15 minutes walk to get to the nearest gate from the central teaching area.
Our main conference venue is located at Mengminwei Humanities Building 蒙民伟人文楼 (often just "Humanities Building" 人文楼, Pinyin: "Ren-wen Lou"), which is also the building for the entire School of Humanities 人文学院.
- It is roughly situated at the center of Tsinghua campus, but not directly reachable by car. A lot of the internal roads in Tsinghua central teaching area are bike-only for commuting students.
Our local hosting department, Department of the History of Science 清华大学科学史系, is located on the 5th floor and B2 level of the building.
- B2 level also hosts our Tsinghua University Science Museum 清华大学科学博物馆, which is in its temporary location and has some exhibition space. Opening times are Wed–Sun, 9:00–16:30, no tickets required. Feel free to drop by!

Shared bikes
Shared bikes (very obvious green/purple/yellow/blue bikes — colours are just different companies):
- Widely available within and outside the campus; note that purple ones are specifically for Tsinghua and therefore cannot be ridden outside the campus (purple as in the symbolic colour of Tsinghua).
- Use: scan QR code on the bike with Alipay, WeChat, or Didi 滴滴, unlock via Bluetooth, cost is approx. 1.5 CNY/hour (See more below: Apps).
Taxis and ride-hailing
Taxis and ride-hailing:
- Taxis and ride-hailing vehicles can enter the campus through most gates (See above: Basic orientation), while other private vehicles without prior registration with campus entrance control cannot.
- Nearest points to the Mengminwei Humanities Building (5-min walk) that are reachable by car are as follows, you may set these as your destinations for taxis/ride-hailing services:
- 新清华学堂 New Tsinghua Auditorium (Pinyin: "Xin Qing-hua Xue-tang")

Map and navigation app
- Unfortunately, Google Maps is not readily available in China.
- Alternatives are: AMap 高德地图, Baidu Maps 百度地图, or Apple Maps.
Taxi and ride-hailing app: Didi 滴滴
- Payments can also be made digitally through Alipay/WeChat within the app.
- Can also be used for scanning and using most of the shared bikes (green and purple ones) within and around Tsinghua.
- For taking taxis/ride-hailing vehicles to get to Tsinghua campus, see above: Basic orientation; Transport around/within Tsinghua.
Payment and many everyday activities app: Alipay 支付宝 (Pinyin: "Zhi Fu Bao") or WeChat/Weixin 微信
- Can link with international bank cards to make digital payments, both widely accepted throughout China.
- Cash payments are less commonly used nowadays; some small business and most taxis/ride-hailing drivers don't support contactless card payments with international bank cards.
- Sometimes you show your personal payment code to the merchant to pay, and sometimes you scan theirs, both ways are common. But please be cautious when scanning unfamiliar QR codes.
- In Alipay, you can also get a transport QR code to scan and pay for Beijing Subway (and also bus).
- Both can be used to scan QR codes on shared bikes to unlock them (covers more companies than Didi 滴滴).
- Many of the places to visit in Beijing require pre-booking (either free or ticketed), and these can be mostly done through Mini-Programs (小程序, Pinyin: "Xiao Cheng Xu") in Alipay/WeChat; if this is the case, you often find a QR code to scan to access the respective Mini-Programs, or specific names of the Mini-Programs to search for and open within Alipay/WeChat.
